Before the aeroplane became everyones international transport it was the stately ocean liners that ploughed the furrow that joined the continents. The journey was often one way, or at least, it would be a very long time before friends and loved ones saw each other again. Along the wharf, coloured streamers would vainly attempt to delay the ship until the last one finally broke at the departure.
