STORM BEACH (1200 wide X 900 high Acrylic) .....Back to gallery
The Watonga Rocks are named from the steamer that was wrecked here many years ago. It remains a dangerous stretch of sands where rips suddenly appear and the sand is stripped form under your feet.
It is thought
that sand caving away under a woman carrying a toddler was what dragged them
into the surf. We arrived in the rescue boat soon after to join the surf rescue
inflatables searches. A coordinated search from land, sea and air was quickly
mounted that combed the area from sand to deeps. At dusk the spotter plane reported
dolphins trying to push an object to the surface, but we found nothing there
as darkness fell. At first light we searched again, but no trace of them was
ever found. On
rugged days here, the voices of those the white water has taken can be imagined.
